GREG TURNER – JUNE 2014

On June 17th 2014 we had a request from Greg Turner member of both the European Tour  and European Seniors Tour to play our course. Greg was anxious to play the course as it was one of a few in Ireland he had yet to play. Greg is involved in golf course design and also on the assessment panel for the publication “The Pocket Guide to Golf Courses”.  Greg brought along his son Jack, 14, who plays off a handicap of 7, and from all accounts puts up a good show when playing his dad. Greg and Jack enjoyed breakfast before playing and after their round spent some time in the clubhouse chatting  to members and Lady Captain Jeannette was more than happy to stand in for a photo. As promised Greg took the time to give his assessment of our course……… in his own words………

Firstly, many thanks for your kind hospitality and warm welcome. I have to say that the quality of the course came as a very pleasant surprise indeed. I am pleased to be able to inform you that I now have a new favorite inland course in Ireland! Having played at a number of the newer inland courses over the years (recalling the likes of Druids Glen, the K Club, Fota Island, Mt Juliet) I don’t believe any of them have either the charm or architectural merit of Carlow. There is much to be said for choosing the best piece of golfing real estate. The combination you have of undulation and elevation change coupled with free draining soils make for ideal golf terrain and fantastic turf. I was especially fond of your group of par 3 holes, with number 6 perhaps being my favorite. There were a number of times during the round when I was reminded of Gleneagles in Scotland although I have no hesitation in saying that the course at Carlow is superior.Being a student of golf course architecture it’s always interesting to see how, in spite of such enormous changes in the golf balls and clubs, great architecture can stand the test of time. Your course is a fine example – proof positive that interesting greens along with firm undulating fairways will always captivate. When you combine those qualities with such pleasant heathland surroundings you have a course to savor!

Thanks again for the hospitality and best wishes to the club.
